Pixel Laser Resurfacing: A Gentler Option for Revealing Gorgeous Skin

Laser skin resurfacing used to be painful and extremely uncomfortable, and the recovery period for this procedure could last from a few weeks to over a month! Not a practical nor attractive option for busy women with a low tolerance for pain. So it’s no wonder that pixel laser resurfacing has piqued the interest of many women.

For many years, the associated risks seemed to outweigh the benefits of traditional laser resurfacing. Downtime was quite long and side effects kept many women from exploring it as a treatment for photoaging or skin discoloration. Perhaps this is why there was a need to develop a less invasive, gentler option.

Now, non-ablative fractionated skin resurfacing has become the latest and safest option for women who want to treat wrinkles, sun spots, melasma, acne and post-operative scars, large pores, and irregular skin texture. It involves little or no downtime, and delivers great results for many patients. The process is so gentle that even sensitive skin on the neck, chest, hands and face can all be treated.

Pixel skin resurfacing is done to perform “micro” ablation through removal of the epidermis in the areas you wish to be treated. This deep skin penetration by the Pixel laser stimulates new collagen through the body’s natural healing process. The newly produced collagen allows for gradual skin tightening, reduction or smoothening of wrinkles and fine lines, softening of deep frown lines, and improved skin tone and texture.

How does it work?

Compared to traditional laser resurfacing treatments that target the entire surface area of the skin, pixel skin resurfacing only targets small areas with each laser pass. Looking at the skin’s surface after one pass, you will see tiny dots, much like the pixels in a zoomed in digital photo. By only targeting a portion of the skin each time, the skin is able to heal faster, thereby reducing downtime significantly. The normal tissue surrounding the laser spots will allow for more effective healing and production of new collagen.

Since there is very little discomfort, patients are also not required to apply topical anesthesia or gels before their treatment. But if you would feel more comfortable applying the usual topical creams, then we would be more than happy to accommodate your request. As a gentler and safer alternative to traditional laser treatments, patients undergoing fractionated skin resurfacing have described it as experiencing a mild heat sensation.

Towards the end of the treatment, you should expect some redness or a mild burning sensation on the treated area, but it is quite tolerable and should resolve within 30 to 180 minutes.

The effects of skin resurfacing is twofold. Immediately after the initial effects have worn off, , your skin will feel softer, look radiant, and more even. As the deeper layers continue to heal over the next three to six months, you will notice the continuing results as they unfold because of your skin’s new production of collagen.

Where can Pixel be used?

Because of the gentler nature of pixel skin resurfacing, it can be used even in more sensitive areas such as neck, hands, and chest. The benefits are improved skin texture and firmness, a shorter recovery period, long term results, and minimal discomfort.

How many treatments are needed?

As with any treatment, a personal evaluation of your skin type and condition, as well as specific issues that need to be addressed will determine the appropriate number of treatments you need to get your desired results. It will also depend on how your skin responds to the treatment. Based on clinical studies, best results can be realized within 3 to 5 sessions spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart.

In addition to skin resurfacing, we also offer skin tightening, wrinkle removal, and the following minimally-invasive “liquid face lift” treatments and injectable fillers:

Botox: administered through minimally-invasive injections without anesthesia to get rid of stubborn frown lines, forehead furrows, and wrinkles.

Dysport: prescription injectable fillers used to improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows.

Restylane® and Perlane®: belong to a family of injectable gels used to add volume and fullness to moderately or severely wrinkled skin near the nose or corners of the mouth.

Juvaderm®: a smooth gel filler used to treat areas around the nose and mouth. It replaces hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a natural hydrating substance in the skin. Results can last for up to a year.

Sculptra®: is the first facial injectable filler that delivers subtle results over time. It replaces the skin’s collagen and helps you achieve a more natural-looking and youthful appearance.

Radiesse®: arguably the best and most immediate treatment for wrinkled skin. It works like a scaffold under the skin by adding volume and lift, as well as stimulating the skin’s natural collagen production.
